Here at LE Smith, we want the manufacturing and skilled trades to experience continued growth. Since homeowners spend an average of $2,912 on installing countertops alone, we know how important it is that laminate countertop manufacturers across the country have qualified employees within their ranks. Whether you’re interested in working with countertop builders in the future or see yourself involved in some other type of manufacturing or skilled trade, here are some scholarships you may want to know more about.
mikeroweWORKS Foundation Scholarships
Dirty Jobs host Mike Rowe founded his 501(c)(3) public charity to give back to those who pursue training for skilled jobs. The foundation’s Work Ethic Scholarship Program and tool scholarships for AED-accredited schools provide financial help for qualified candidates who want to learn an in-demand skill. Over the years, this foundation has granted more than $3 million for individuals to pursue an education in trade schools across the country. While the 2017 Work Ethic Scholarship Program winners have already been chosen, the foundation’s website is a good place to find out more information on upcoming opportunities.
Associated General Contractors of America Workforce Development Scholarship
If you’d rather work directly with laminate countertop manufacturers without becoming one yourself (and you have an interest in design and installation), you may want to consider applying for an AGC Foundation scholarship. This scholarship is given to those who showcase their commitment to the industry, who have worked part-time or seasonally in the construction field, have demonstrated their goals for the future, and have shown academic motivation and success. Since 1970, 4,000-plus scholarships have been granted. See the AGC’s page for applicant criteria for more information.
JoAnn Link Hetzel Vocational Scholarship
For those attending full-time trade school in North Dakota, the JoAnn Link Hetzel Vocational Scholarship may be of interest. Run by an affiliate of Scholarship America known as North Dakota Dollars For Scholars, this scholarship awards $1,000 to qualified students who have maintained a cumulative 2.5 GPA. Students who are studying welding, surveying, mechanics, or electrical construction (as well as those who are employed by local industry entities) are given preference. The deadline for scholarship application is typically in April.
The Smart Service Scholarship
The Smart Service Scholarship gives $2,000 every year to a student who is pursuing a career in a skilled trade (like HVAC, plumbing, landscaping, or construction) or in field service. Applicants must be currently attending or plant to attend a degree, certificate, or accredited program in skilled trades or in a related field within the next year. Application deadlines are usually in the beginning of September, so if you want to eventually work with a laminate countertop manufacturer and want to apply, check out the website and start planning ahead for next year.
As leaders in our industry, we want to see the industry keep on growing. These scholarships provide promise to qualified individuals who want to get involved.
